Paper Abstract: Examines 20th Cent. Russian painter's life, creative influences & development & analyzes 1914 abstract work's form, color, symbolism.
Paper Introduction: Wassily Kandinsky's Untitled Improvisation III (1914), a work owned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, was done in oil paint on cardboard. The painting measures approximately 25 by 20 inches. This work is one of a series Kandinsky painted in the first years of his experiments with purely non-objective art. Kandinsky theorized about abstract painting and Untitled Improvisation III can be studied with reference to his theories about color and spirituality in art.
Kandinsky was born in Russia in 1866. He became a lawyer and it was not until he was thirty years old that he gave up a career as a legal scholar to become a painter. In 1896 he moved to Munich to take up his new career and, with trips to Paris, became familiar with the current trends in painting. In 1907 he exhibited with the early German expressionist group Die Brucke (The Bridge). Sometime between 1910 and 1912 he painted his first non-objective work--a watercolor.

Paper Abstract: Explores abstract painter's ideas, five major periods, color & form, theology, focusing on his book [On the Spiritual in Art].
Paper Introduction: There is some controversy over who made the first non-objective painting and Vasily Kandinsky is sometimes given credit for the accomplishment. Though this is certainly not true it does seem fitting since Kandinsky certainly was the first artist to make non-objectivity "the very foundation of his pictorial imagery." Kandinsky also wrote extensively on the theory of abstract painting. His best known treatise, On the Spiritual in Art, became one of the most influential theoretical works of the twentieth century. Generations of abstract painters absorbed his belief in "inner necessity as the only source of art." Although Kandinsky had an enormous influence on the course of painting and was himself a great painter, it still remains difficult to reconcile his theoretical writings with the work he produced. There are two problems in applying the ideas to the

Paper Abstract: A critique of her theory of art as expressed in [Philosophy in a New Key]. Focus is on her concept of art as presentational symbols.
Paper Introduction: In her book, Philosophy in a New Key, Susanne Langer draws a provocative distinction between verbal discourse and works of art. According to Langer, works of art are presentational symbols. These symbols conceptualize the flux of impressions in the sensory field and transform them into a concrete form. They articulate complex and subtle feelings and emotions which would be incommunicable through language. Presentational symbols differ from Discursive symbols (language) in that they have no vocabulary or syntax. One cannot, according to Langer, obtain meaning from a part of an art work in the same way as one can from part of a sentence. The art work has meaning only in as much as one scrutinizes the work as a whole, a constituent element has no intrinsic meaning. Presentational symbols are no less capable of articulation than are words. However, the laws

Paper Abstract: Traces Gauguin's life, associations with other artists, & artistic career. Focus is on what he intended to be his final work: WHERE DO WE COME FROM? WHAT ARE WE? WHERE ARE WE GOING? The scene, elements, & composition are described.
Paper Introduction: INTRODUCTION
Paul Gauguin painted his "Whence come we? What are we? Whither go we?" during his second stay in Tahiti, and it is a vast work that embodies the themes and images that he made his own based on his trips to Tahiti. This is a massive work which today is found in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It was painted in 1897 during a period of despondency, and the work can be seen as an expression of the inner turmoil experienced by the artist. The painting's underlying sense of mortality is spiritually oriented and can be seen as a statement by the painter of his sense of devotion to nature, to Tahiti, to the people and to the life he lived there. It reflects the artist's mood and in a sense foreshadows his attempted suicide.

Paper Abstract: Compares "Portrait of Emile Zola" & "Au Cafe" by 19th Cent. French Impressionist.
Paper Introduction: This paper will be an analysis and discussion of the painter Edouard Manet, and a comparison and analysis of two of his works; Portrait of Emile Zola, 1868, and, Au Cafe, 1878. Manet was a heavy influence among the master impressionists, from Claude Monet to Auguste Renoir. However, he refused to have his work exhibited with theirs anywhere outside of the official Salon. Manet was born in "1832 and died in 1883," a French painter influenced by Spanish masters Velazquez and Goya. From the late eighteen fifties to the early eighteen eighties, Manet's life was filled with the adventure of the Paris Salons, Cafe's and gardens. As a result, his works are some of the most colorful and adventurous in all of modern art. The negative periods of say, a Picasso, or a Van Gogh are not as readily apparent. The subjects of war and revolution were more important to Manet than

Paper Abstract: Analyzes 1863 realistic painting of nude prostitute.
Paper Introduction: Olympia by Édouard Manet (1832-83) was painted in 1863 and exhibited at the Salon in 1865, where it caused an immense sensation. The painting, which is oil on canvas, measures 130.5 x 190 cm and currently hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. One of the most important paintings of the nineteenth century, the Olympia depicts a young prostitute stretched out on pillows and sheets on a long bed in an elegant room. She wears earrings, a bracelet, a slim choker, one of a pair of high-heeled slippers, and a flower in her hair. A black maid in a pale pink dress stands behind the bed offering a newly-arrived bouquet and a black cat stretches itself at the foot of the bed. But the young woman stares directly out at the viewer. The furor raised by the painting was due to Manet's frank realist approach, which encompassed his unusual method of painting, the nature of the

Paper Abstract: Life, career, influences, techniques, themes & works of Amer. photographer.
Paper Introduction: Sally Mann is a photographer whose work has consistently challenged conventional notions of subject and technique. Her broadest fame derives from the somewhat controversial photographs of her children published in Immediate family (1992). The themes of that work, childhood and coming-of-age, had also been explored in, respectively, the "Dream Sequence" (1971) and At twelve: Portraits of young women (1988). But other portfolios, such as her "Landscapes" (1972-73), the Lewis Law Portfolio (1977), a series of "Platinum Prints" (1978-80), and her 1997 "Georgia" and Virginia" series, demonstrate a range of subject matter that belies any attempt to limit Mann to domestic subjects or a topic such as puberty. Instead the distinguishing characteristic of her work is the manner in which developments in technique (coupled with great openness on technical matters such as choice

Paper Introduction: Robert Mapplethorpe
This paper will explore Robert Mapplethorpe's works and his photography subjects, themes, concepts and influences. It will also touch on Mapplethorpe's personality and how it affected his work and on his relationship to the New York art scene. Mapplethorpe was a contemporary American photographer whose works continue to influence the genre. He traversed uncharted territory with the camera, if not exactly in his choice of subjects, then in the manner in which those subjects are dealt with and in the unusual emotional aura that encompasses the photographs, creating perplexing feelings in the person looking at them. It is the ability to produce these feelings, along with the excellent technicality of Mapplethorpe's works, that made him one of the better known photographers in the United States.

Paper Abstract: Legal & aesthetic analysis of sadomasochistic photos, critical responses, theory of art, censorship, Cincinnati pornography trial.
Paper Introduction: The photographer Robert Mapplethorpe has been the subject of a continuing series of debates about what is or is not art, about which art should be supported by public funds, and about the nature of his own work. At the center of the controversies are a group of works known as the X Portfolio which depict homoerotic sadomasochistic acts and, more generally, eroticize male genitalia in a manner never attempted before in Western art. The cancellation of a Mapplethorpe retrospective by the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D. C., the uproar in Congress over funding the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and the obscenity trial of a Cincinnati museum and its director were the major events in the controversy that reached beyond Mapplethorpe himself and extended to a public furor over the nature of art. In the midst of these controversies, the philosopher and art

Paper Abstract: Life, career, style, works, subjects, use of color of 19th-20th Cent. French impressionist painter.
Paper Introduction: The career of Henri Matisse (1869-1954), who is often considered to be the greatest French painter of the twentieth century, had several important stages. His first major works were identified with the group of artists known as the Fauves (or "wild beasts") because of their violent colors and their nonrealistic treatment of space and form. In Matisse's middle phase he retreated to somewhat more realistic representations of sunny Mediterranean scenes and became more interested in creating patterns than in breaking down the relationships between forms and space. But, at the end of his life, Matisse once again rejected standard types of representation and worked with paper cutouts, creating works that focused on the effects of movement, color, and shape.

Paper Abstract: Examines traces of different styles of art from various periods in Henri Matisse's 1911 painting "The Red Studio." Indirect and direct influences, including Mary Cassatt, Van Gogh and other Post-Impressionists, Greek vase painting, High Gothic and Early Renaissance one-point perspective. Matisse's artistic purpose in the painting. Use of color as expression.
Paper Introduction: It is possible to detect traces of several different styles of art from various periods in Henri Matisse's 1911 painting Red Studio (oil on canvas, 71 1/4" x 86 1/4"). In some cases these traces are the sign of direct influence. An example of this is the influence of artists, such as the nineteenth century painter and printmaker Mary Cassatt, who first integrated ideas from Japanese art into the Western tradition. A second example of an immediate influence is the use of intense, unusual colors as a means of emotional expression found in the work of Vincent van Gogh and other Post-Impressionist painters. Other relationships between Red Studio and earlier art seem to be purely coincidental. The simple lines of many of the objects in Matisse's painting, for example, bear similarities to Greek red-figure vase painting from the early classical era. But there are

Paper Abstract: Studies the creation of this massive statue, including stylistic analysis & a consideration of the artist's personality.
Paper Introduction: In 1504, Michelangelo completed his massive statue known as the David. This work, which is located in Florence, stands more than fourteen feet high. It is a powerful work, and it was responsible for establishing Michelangelo's fame as an artist. The David shows Michelangelo's knowledge of anatomy, as well as his skill in handling such artistic attributes as balance and proportion. In addition, the marble sculpture conveys an image of the human body which is almost superhuman. In this way, the David encompasses the idea of divinity within the human being. This idea was representative of the values which were developing during the Renaissance period. After centuries of Church domination in human affairs, the Renaissance marked a return to the humanistic values of the ancient world. A study of Michelangelo's life and career reveals that the artist's

Paper Abstract: Renaissance artist's chapel ceiling paintings. Technique, colors, organization, subjects.
Paper Introduction: Michelangelo's fresco paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were completely restored by early 1994. According to art historians, Michelangelo's painting "is reappearing from beneath layers of extraneous materials . . . as if a window in a dark room is being opened to reveal a bright panorama" (De Vecchi 7).
Michelangelo's work is characterized by the painstaking work and technique which evidences the highest level of craftsmanship that was "typical of fresco painters in the Renaissance period" (De Vecchi 26). The famous painter began his work by applying plaster and carefully choosing his pigments. Although his work was clearly that of a genius, it was also done very much in the style and spirit of other great Florentine masters like Domenico, Ghirlandio, and Luca Signorelli.

Paper Abstract: Life, training, career & major works of 15th Cent.-16th Cent. Italian Renaissance artist.
Paper Introduction: This paper will discuss the life of Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), who is "the most famous artist who ever lived and many would say the greatest" (Hibbard 10). Michelangelo was an Italian Renaissance artist who is most widely known for his sculptures David and the Pieta, as well as the frescoed ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in the village of Caprese, where his father Lodovico Buonarroti, "was serving a short term as mayor (podesta) - almost his first job" (15). The family had once been wealthy, but by the time Michelangelo was born they had lost most of their fortune. Even so, they were proud people who continued to live as though they were still rich. For example, Michelangelo's father "took on the grand manner of a decadent nobleman and would not work" (Besdine 15). Michelangelo was the second of five

Paper Abstract: Historical context of chapel frescoes, spiritual & cultural significance, style, theory, relationship with Pope Julius II.
Paper Introduction: The purpose of this research is to examine the artistic decoration of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. The plan of the research will be to set forth the historical context in which the decoration of the chapel was undertaken, and then to discuss the work with reference to Michelangelo's sculpture and decor of other churches in the preceding periods, as well as to the significance of Michelangelo's complex relationship with Pope Julius II for the project.
The historical context for Michelangelo's decoration of the Sistine Chapel is the tension in the fifteenth century between the Church as the dominant institution in Europe and the increasing secularism of culture. In this regard, Gutek believes that the cultural traditions of the classical period never quite disappeared from the time of the fall of Rome and the emergence

Paper Abstract: Examines 1903 work's technique, style, colors, light, subject, issues of reproduction.
Paper Introduction: Monet's London pictures demonstrate his ability to convey atmosphere and also show his approach to experimentation with the technical means to portray atmospheric effects. These are part of the "series" method of representing nature, a method that originated in giving attention to more and more specific weather phenomena. In a series, Monet would paint the same subject at different times of day, on subsequent days, with different atmospheric conditions, and so on, and in so doing he would observe and recreate the range of light and a variety of specific atmospheric conditions. Many of the works he painted in London show his dedication to finding a technique that will accomplish this task.
