Paper Abstract:
Insurance industry discrimination based on inner-city zones. Legal, ethical, business & public policy issues, impact on seller & buyer, economic theory, mortgage banking, more.

Paper Introduction:
Insurance is a mechanism for reducing financial risk and spreading financial loss; it is a major social institution that is essential to the functioning of virtually any type of modern economy. In terms of economic importance, particularly in capitalist-oriented economies, the mortgage-lending process is another major social institution, ensuring that individuals and businesses with limited financial resources can aspire to, and acquire, property for the purpose of domicile or enterprise. Insurance and mortgage-lending engage a society on two levels: the economic and, by extension, the social spheres of activity. In so becoming such broad-based participants in the community, they step into that grey area of activity where business and social goals co-exist - sometimes in cooperation, sometimes in conflict. In a classless society such as the United States

Examines Coca-Cola, PepsiCo & Cadbury Schweppes;industry conditions, competition, diversification, marketing.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction Coca-Cola has arguably one of the most valuable brands in the world. A successful multinational company with operations throughout the world, Coca-Cola's red and white soda cans have become well known in nearly every country. The company has achieved this dominant position in the highly competitive soft beverage market, and is now seeking to continue to expand its market share through additional acquisitions. This is a strategy which has worked for the company in the past, and which has particular import at this time because of the flattening of demand for soft beverages. This area of research is important and relevant because soft drink sales in many parts of the world, and in the United States in particular, have plateaued. Many companies, including CocaCola realize a higher percentage of their profits from their f

Paper Introduction:
INDUSTRY ANALYSIS Retail Internet Sites Industry Warning This is a topic in desperate need of clarification. For example, if one takes the term "Retail Internet Sites" to be the subject of the industry, the analysis would go askew for the very simple fact that a "Retail Internet Site" is nothing more than a "domain name," -- http://www.mystore.com -- which is referred to as a "retail site." If that is the topic, then the industry analysis would be slender, since there is only one company, InterNIC.net that has the franchise in the United States to register domain names. If the topic is construed to be a consideration of retail sites on the Internet, then the opposite is true. Instead of a slender industry analysi

Examines decline, national & global factors, risks, deregulation, technology, competition, junk bonds & Michael Milken, outlook.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction The investment banking industry has undergone tremendous change in the past three decades. The industry suffered its greatest public relations problems during the 1980s, when it was generally associated with the savings and loan crisis and when individuals such as Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky were portrayed by the media as rogue traders playing with the pensions and life savings of investors. However, a number of trends besides the development of the junk bond market have coalesced to produce an environment in the investment banking industry which is vastly different from that of the early 1960s. Based on these trends, it is likely that the industry will undergo continued development in the near future to the point that it is again competitive in a global economy. The trends which have

CHANGE IN LIFE INSURANCE UNDERWRITING STANDARDS: 1984-1999 Introduction This research reviews changes in life insurance underwriting standards over the 15-year period 1984-1999. Life insurance underwriting standards, as the term is used in this research refers to the criteria applied by life insurance underwriters in assessing risk in relation to insuring lives, accepting or rejecting applications for life insurance, and establishing rates for life insurance (St. Jean 10). Life insurance underwriters review applications for insurance coverage submitted to the insurance company. The underwriter assesses the potential risk of the applicant, and accepts, rejects, or modifies the policy according to law or company standards. The basic concepts from which underwriting pro

Types, sales, firms (Gilette, BIC, Perrigo), compared to women's market.

Paper Introduction:
Razors and electric shavers in the United States are targeted both at men and women as consumers, but the market for men is considered far greater than that for women. Most of the research and design efforts that have been undertaken in this industry have focused on the men's market, with the recent notable exception of the Sensor for Women razor produced by Gillette (which followed the successful introduction of the Sensor for men). The emphasis on the men’s market can be explained by the fact that men’s razors traditionally far outsell women’s razors, though it is accepted that many women purchase men’s razors for their own purposes. This research examines the men's razor market in the United states, including its size, the international market for razors, the competition in the market and trends that may be developing.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction The ease with which beer can be made, and the relative ease with which ingredients can be obtained, means that a number of individuals have brewed their own beer for years. This was particularly true during Prohibition, but some beer drinkers have found that they can create more interesting and flavorful beers in their basements than the largest beer manufacturers can create and bottle. In recent years, these so-called home brews have been taken to market and shared with local restaurants and consumers within a particular region; some companies, such as Anchor Brewing and Boston Beer, have capitalized on the renewed interest in more flavorful beers, and have even done much to promote that interest themselves. Today, brewpubs and restaurants serving local beers are common in many large cities, and even in places with sm

Paper Introduction:
Introduction There are three major classes of computers: mainframes, minicomputers and microcomputers. As computer technology has developed, the lines between these classes have blurred and each class has stretched its boundaries into the other. Today's desktop and laptop computers (microcomputers) are capable of performing calculations which 30 years ago would have been limited to the powerful mainframe computer class. A product such as the microcomputer, which has experienced a strong surge in demand during the 1980s and 1990s, has not gone unnoticed by competitors in this industry. This research examines the history of the microcomputer industry and the major participants, and considers the direction in which the industry is headed through the use of Porter's Five Forces and STEP analysis. INTRODUCTION At one time the term "movie studio" meant just that--a location where the company conducted its business, filmed its product, and performed the remainder of the tasks necessary to make a finished film. A studio may or may not also have had a distribution apparatus of its own, but it must have access to such an apparatus to get its films to the theaters. What a studio does not necessarily need today is the physical plant that once was so essential, for soundstage space can be rented and most films make use of real locales to a much greater extent and have little need of the back lot that used to be so important. The studio to be created here will require an office building of some size for the different departments, some of which can be housed in other buildings or even other parts of town when that

On-Line Marketing The Market Significance of the Internet The World Wide Web was started in 1990 as a way for researchers to communicate easily over the Internet (Skinner, 1996, p. 9). Since then, however, it has grown into an international market where businesses advertise their products and services. A 1996 survey by Dun & Bradstreet Corporation's Nielsen Media Research reported that approximately 24 million people in the United States and Canada are on the Internet. Skinner observes that number is 11 percent of the North American population over age 16 (1996, p. 9). Consequently, the Web provides a significant market for businesses, and it is likely the number of people accessing the Web will only increase in the future. Thus, the question is not whether a company should

Paper Abstract:
Reviews the history & prospects of the fast food industry. Focuses on the traditional sandwich & hamburger chains, national vs. regional firms, new firms such as Mexican & Pizza outlets, & prospects for the future.

Paper Introduction:
OVERVIEW OF THE FAST FOOD INDUSTRY The fast-food market in the United States was a growth industry beginning in the 1970s. However, by the 1990s both growth and overall sales in the hamburger segment were declining, while there was some growth in other segments. The top three hamburger chains continued to struggle against the tide, facing declining customer base, sales, and profits. The chains were faced with the need to expand their menus in response to the public's demand for lighter, healthier foods and greater variety. The rapidly expanding doubledrivethru sector seems to be taking over the function that the major hamburger chains used to perform but have largely grown beyond: serving a strictly limited menu of simple food, fast and cheap. McDonald's and Burger King have been exploring new menu items to attract customers. Carl's Jr.

Paper Introduction:
The perfume industry is in a period of expansion and diffusion, with new fragrances, a new emphasis on bottle design, and inclusion of a number of celebrity endorsers and "creators" to boost sales and add an aura of glamour to new products. Trends can be discerned in the types of fragrances produced each year which will continue into the future. Elizabeth Taylor has been very successful with her two lines of perfume and has boosted sales through her television commercials for these products. Television advertising has been an important component in the marketing of fragrances for some time. The commercials deal primarily with image, mystery, and a sense of style of the fragrance. Paper Introduction:
Abstract Perfumes have been used by humans to improve their scent since early recorded history. Once relegated to simple augmentations of other products, such as handkerchiefs and writing paper, perfumes began to be sold directly to customers in stores throughout Europe. The advertising and promotion used to market perfumes today depends on a combination of making the actual scent available for evaluation, and also associating a powerful image with that scent, such as the image of sexual allure, personal power or mystery. Successful ad campaigns can help new fragrances achieve strong market positions, thereby assisting the overall success of the manufacturer. Campaigns and scents which are not successful are quickly withdrawn from this highly competitive market. Perfumes, and their pro

Paper Introduction:
This research examines the global strategies of the American petroleum industry. The findings of this research are presented in four major areas of interest: production and consumption comparisons for the United States and other global regions; global configuration; global coordination; competition strategy; and industry structure. The contemporary history of the United States has been and continues to be characterized by a dependency on foreign sources of energy--primarily on crude oil (Ashton, 1992, p. 82). Overall, the United States produces energy in an amount equivalent to 88.9 percent of its total energy consumption (Energy Information Administration, 1992, pp. 126-127). Paper Introduction:
Resort hotels outperformed standard hotels during 1990 in terms of occupancy levels, room rates and operating profits. During that year, occupancy levels exceeded standard hotels by 11 percent in the United States and elsewhere, and the average room rate in a resort was 80 percent higher than at standard hotels. This translates to an average occupancy rate of 75 percent for resorts and 64 percent for standard hotels (Blum, 18). Recognizing that resorts compose a unique and lucrative component of the hotel market, this research seeks to understand the different types of resorts and the occupancy problems that are associated with each. In addition, methods of increasing the occupancy rate are examined. The scope of the research is limited to the United States. Resorts are hotels that are destinations in and of thems
